Chili warmth, smoky paprika, and a squeeze of fresh lime turn a bag of frozen shrimp into a bright, savory dinner. Serve these juicy shrimp over rice, tuck them into warm tortillas, or pile them onto a crunchy cabbage salad.
Cook frozen raw shrimp at 400°F (204°C), allowing approximately 8–12 minutes per batch and checking early at 6 minutes. This recipe makes 4 servings with sides. Allow about 20–25 minutes total for preparation, preheating, and one batch; add roughly 8–12 minutes for each additional batch needed to keep the shrimp in a spaced single layer. Timings are estimates, since shrimp size and air-fryer performance vary.
Estimated hands-on preparation: 5 minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 pound frozen raw large shrimp, 21–30 per pound, peeled and deveined, tails on or off
- 1 tablespoon avocado oil or olive oil
- 1 teaspoon mild chili powder, preferably a salt-free American-style blend
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon ground cumin
- ¼ teaspoon fine salt, or less if the shrimp or chili powder contains added salt
- ⅛ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon finely grated lime zest
- 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice, plus lime wedges for serving
- 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro, optional
- ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional, for extra heat
Choose raw, unbreaded shrimp, not pink, precooked cocktail shrimp. Use individually frozen shrimp that separate easily rather than a solid frozen block. Tails-off shrimp are convenient for tacos and bowls; tails-on shrimp work well when serving them as an appetizer.
The lime is divided deliberately: zest and juice go on after cooking for a fresh finish, while the dry chili seasoning coats the shrimp during air frying.
How To Make It
- Prepare the seasoning and lime. In a small bowl, stir together the chili powder, smoked paprika, garlic powder, cumin, salt, black pepper, and optional cayenne. In a separate serving bowl, combine the lime zest and juice. Chop the cilantro, if using, and have the oil and a mixing bowl ready before preheating.
- Check the frozen shrimp and preheat. Shake off any loose ice crystals. If a few shrimp are stuck together, separate them gently without forcing or breaking them. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (204°C) according to its instructions, usually about 3–5 minutes. Leave shrimp for any later batches in the freezer.
- Start the shrimp without seasoning. Arrange as many frozen shrimp as will fit in a single layer with small gaps between them. Do not stack them. Air fry for 3 minutes to begin melting the surface ice. This short first stage gives you an opportunity to remove excess moisture before adding the spice coating.
- Drain and season. Using tongs, transfer the shrimp to the mixing bowl. Blot away visible surface moisture with paper towels, then toss with the oil and seasoning. If cooking in batches, use only the proportion of oil and seasoning needed for that batch. If water has collected beneath the basket, carefully empty it according to the appliance instructions, keeping clear of hot liquid and surfaces. Return the shrimp to their spaced single layer.
- Finish cooking, checking early. Cook for another 3 minutes, then begin checking—this is 6 minutes total cooking time. Turn the shrimp and continue in 1–2-minute increments as needed, allowing approximately 8–12 minutes total per batch. Check several of the largest shrimp with a thin-tip instant-read thermometer inserted sideways into the thickest part; they should reach 145°F (63°C). The flesh should also be firm, pearly, and opaque through the center. Remove finished shrimp promptly rather than waiting for deep browning.
- Finish with chili-lime flavor. Transfer the cooked shrimp to the clean bowl containing the lime juice and zest. Toss gently, add the cilantro, and serve immediately. For additional batches, repeat with the remaining frozen shrimp and seasoning, dividing the lime mixture between batches if serving them separately. Try rice, shredded cabbage, avocado, and warm tortillas alongside.

Tips
- Let basket space determine batching. A pound may fit in a wide basket but crowd a smaller one. Keep the shrimp separated rather than adding extra cooking time to compensate for a crowded basket.
- Use the size count, not just “large.” Package descriptions vary. The 21–30-per-pound count gives you a clearer starting point for this recipe. Smaller shrimp need particular attention at the early check; unusually large shrimp may need longer.
- Aim for tender, not crunchy. These are unbreaded shrimp with a light spice coating, not a crisp shell. Do not keep cooking solely to darken their edges.
- Keep the raw-shrimp method separate from precooked shrimp. Precooked frozen shrimp need a shorter reheating period and can dry out if given the full cooking time here.
Storage and Reheating
Refrigerate leftovers in a shallow, airtight container within 2 hours, or within 1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F (32°C). Keep refrigerated at 40°F (4°C) or below and use within 3–4 days.
For reheating, try a covered skillet over low heat with a teaspoon or two of water, turning the shrimp frequently. Heat leftovers to 165°F (74°C), then remove them promptly. Add a fresh squeeze of lime after reheating, and warm only the portion you plan to eat.
