If you want a protein smoothie that tastes more like dessert than a typical protein shake, this coconut protein smoothie is a good one to try.
It is thick, creamy and slightly tropical, with coconut milk, banana, vanilla protein powder and shredded coconut giving it a flavor that is surprisingly close to coconut cream pie.
It also takes only a few minutes to make.
Coconut Protein Smoothie Ingredients
You will need:
- 1 cup coconut milk
- 1 ripe banana
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
- 2 tablespoons shredded coconut
- 5–6 ice cubes
- Optional: toasted coconut for topping
A ripe banana works best here because it adds sweetness while also making the smoothie much creamier.
For an even thicker smoothie, you can use a frozen banana and reduce the amount of ice.
How to Make It
Add the coconut milk, banana, vanilla protein powder, shredded coconut and ice to a blender.
Blend for around 30–45 seconds, or until completely smooth.
If the smoothie is too thick, add another splash of coconut milk. If you want it thicker, add a few extra ice cubes or some frozen banana.
Pour into a glass and top with a little shredded or toasted coconut.
That’s it.
Why This Smoothie Works
Coconut and vanilla naturally work well together, but the banana is what gives this smoothie its cream-pie-like texture.
It adds enough sweetness that you usually don’t need honey, maple syrup or another sweetener.
The vanilla protein powder also does more than simply increase the protein content. Its vanilla flavor makes the smoothie taste much closer to an actual dessert.
Shredded coconut adds a little extra coconut flavor and gives the smoothie a richer texture.
Make It Even Creamier
For the creamiest version, freeze your banana beforehand.
Peel and slice a ripe banana, place the pieces in a freezer-safe container and freeze them for a few hours. Using frozen banana makes the smoothie noticeably thicker without needing lots of ice.
You can also add a spoonful of Greek yogurt if you want an even thicker texture and a little extra protein.
If you want more coconut flavor, use full-fat coconut milk or add an extra tablespoon of shredded coconut.
