Frozen chicken nuggets get hot centers and crispy edges in the air fryer with almost no prep. For fully cooked frozen nuggets, set the air fryer to 390°F (199°C) and cook for about 7–9 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. No preheating is needed for this method. Check your package first: these directions are for nuggets, not larger chicken strips or raw breaded chicken.
Ingredients
- 10 fully cooked frozen chicken nuggets, about 6 oz
- 2 tbsp ketchup or your favorite dipping sauce, optional
That’s the whole shopping list. The nuggets can go straight from the freezer into the basket; there’s no need to thaw them or add oil. Keep the sauce on the side so the breading stays crisp.
How To Make It
- Check the bag to confirm the nuggets are labeled fully cooked. If your brand gives different air-fryer directions, follow its directions instead.
- Arrange the 10 frozen nuggets in a single layer in the air-fryer basket, leaving a little space between pieces. Cook in batches if your basket is too small to fit them without piling them up.
- Set the air fryer to 390°F (199°C). Cook for 7–9 minutes, shaking the basket about halfway through. Start checking at 7 minutes; brands, nugget sizes, and air fryers vary.
- Make sure the nuggets are heated through. For a temperature check, insert an instant-read thermometer from the side toward the center of a thicker nugget and look for 165°F (74°C). Continue heating in short increments if needed. Serve with the dipping sauce.
Tips
Know which nuggets you have. A browned coating does not prove chicken is fully cooked. If the package says raw, uncooked, or ready to cook, do not use this quick timing. Follow the product’s cooking directions and verify that raw poultry reaches 165°F (74°C). If a raw breaded product has no air-fryer directions, use a cooking method specified on its package instead. Do not air-fry raw, stuffed breaded chicken breast products.
Give them room. An uncrowded layer lets hot air reach more of the breading. Shaking halfway helps expose the edges, but you can turn individual nuggets with tongs if they stick. Skip loose parchment or liners, especially in an empty basket.
Poultry does not require a safety rest after reaching its safe internal temperature, though letting the nuggets cool briefly makes them easier to dip. Refrigerate any leftovers promptly.
Bring on the dipping sauce and enjoy those crispy little edges!
